Sponges such as this can take on completely different growth forms depending on where they are living. High up the estuary this sprawling, finger-like form is found which can grow in clumps up to a metre in diameter! You may have seen it on the shore - a few millimetres thick - as a yellow/green crust on the rock. (© Kate Lock)
